If someone shares your intimate images (or threatens to)
Sharing, or threatening to share, intimate images of someone without their consent is a criminal offence in Ireland under the Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Act 2020, known as Coco's Law. This applies whether or not the person sharing them intended to cause harm.
What you can do
- Report it to An Garda Síochána. You can go to any Garda station, and you don't have to have “proof” prepared in advance.
- Report it to Hotline.ie, Ireland's service for reporting intimate image abuse, who will work with the platform to have it removed.
- Report the content directly to the platform it's on and ask for it to be removed, stating that it was shared without your consent.
- Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have a right to request erasure of your personal data, including images of you, from a platform, and a right to object to it being processed. A platform must respond to this kind of request within a month.
A note on AI-generated or “deepfake” images
- The law in this area is actively being clarified.
- There's a strong view, including from Ireland's AI Advisory Council, that existing law already covers digitally altered or AI-generated intimate images shared without consent.
- The Oireachtas is working on amending Coco's Law to put this beyond doubt.
- In practice, treat a fake or altered intimate image exactly as you would a real one: report it to Gardaí, Hotline.ie and the platform, and get advice from a solicitor or support worker on where things currently stand.
